Up Close and Personal - Jean Evins
..

EARLY YEARS:

Jean was born in Mishawaka, Indiana. She grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico, an "incurable tomboy", and graduated from Santa Fe High in 1961.

In the Santa Fe environment, she first decided to make art her career.

EDUCATION:

Jean took a BFA from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque in1965 and an MFA in painting from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale in1967.

WORK HISTORY:

Right out of college, Jean found a wealth of experimental opportunity in the museum field and pursued a career as a museum exhibit designer for twenty years. Most of these years were with the Museum of Science and History in Fort Worth (1969-1988) where she gained a reputation as an innovator, technically and conceptually.

In the 80's, she left the museum field to pursue her interest in the digital revolution.

AESTHETIC INTEREST:

As an artist and as a designer, Jean has a minimalist's interest in color and form. She is fascinated by the photographic manipulation of forms and colors and the psychological interpretations these evoke.

This interest is shown in her early hard-edge paintings which are highly stylized (1965-1970) and in her more recent "Nature Study" paintings (1970 - present) which are intentionally accidental . Both styles rely on photographic effects for inspiration and evolve from her choice of raw canvas and acrylic paint as the media.

Jean's prints and drawings tend toward the whimsical.

Flash animation now brings together the whimsy and stylization that Jean has toyed with for years in a way never before possible.

AS A PERSON:

A multifaceted personality, shy and reticent at times and comically unreserved at others, a jack-of-all-trades and master-of-some, Jean is simply and eccentrically the living proof that one cannot separate an artist from her work.

CURRENTLY:

Jean lives in Fort Worth, Texas with a Macintosh, a cat, five chickens and a very active dog named Sheba. Sheba is half Doberman, half Border Collie.
